The first step of the routine, and two products in one. On dry skin it has the give of rice mochi and works as a wash-off mask, three to five minutes and rinsed away. Add water instead and the same material turns to a dense foam cleanser. Built on amino-acid surfactants at your skin's own pH, it takes off the day without taking the barrier with it. How to use

As a wash-off mask: onto dry skin, enough to cover. Leave it for three to five minutes. It goes on opaque and lightens as it dries. Then wet your hands well and work it into foam, adding water as you go. Rinse.
As a foam cleanser: a small amount into wet hands. Add water and work it into a foam, then massage over the face. Rinse.
Follow with the Rice Biome Radiance Essence while skin is still damp.
If you have worn makeup or sunscreen, take that off first with a makeup remover.
If your skin is easily bothered, use it as a foam cleanser first and add the mask once you know how it suits you.

💡Our tips

If your skin is on the dry side, water alone in the morning is usually enough. Keep the cleanser for the evening.
No time for a face mask? Put it on before you get into the shower! It has its three to five minutes while you do everything else, and rinses away at the end.

What does the work

15.5% amino-acid surfactants

Three of them, derived from glycine, glutamic acid and taurine, formulated at pH 5 to 6.5. They lift away sebum and the day without taking the barrier with them.

33% glycerin

A third of the formula is there to hold water. It is why skin feels comfortable rather than tight once it is rinsed.

Rice and fermentation

Four ingredients from rice and fermentation run through every formula we make: a sanghwang mushroom ferment, a Lactobacillus postbiotic, rice bran water and rice bran extract.

The rice foundation

All four of our formulas begin where makgeolli begins. Korean rice wine, brewed with a starter called nuruk and then left alone, because the process cannot be hurried. Brewers keep their hands in the mash all day, and somebody noticed, long before anyone measured why, that those hands stayed soft.

The parts milling throws away

The germ holds two-thirds of the nutrition in a grain of rice, and the bran, where our extract comes from, almost another third. White rice is what is left over, about five per cent.

From Gochang in Korea

The whole county of Gochang is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and that is where our rice ferment comes from. Sanghwang mushroom grown on brown rice sprouted in mineral water, then fermented and filtered through cloth. We use twice as much of it as the supplier asks for.

What the bacteria leave behind

Lactobacillus does the fermenting and is then removed; a lysate is what stays, and unlike a live culture it keeps. Skin carries bacteria of its own, and this is here with that in mind.

Older than any ingredient list

Migamsu, the water left from washing rice, has been used on the face in Korea for centuries. Ours is drawn from the bran itself, and it carries vitamins B1, A and E.

The accents

The tree of no worries

Muhwanja is what Koreans call the soapberry tree, from a belief that one planted near the house kept misfortune away. Its fruit is dense with saponins, and people washed with it for two thousand years before surfactants had names.

Carried down from the Andes

The Amazon carries mineral down from the Andes to Marajó, the largest island in the world surrounded by fresh water. Fallen fruit and leaves go into the same soil. The kaolin that comes out is absorbent, helping to draw away excess surface oil and clear impurities without drying out the skin.

The one from Ceylon

Most of what is sold as cinnamon comes from a different, more common tree. This is Cinnamomum zeylanicum, the true one. Its bark carries catechin and tannin-natural astringents that help minimize excess shine and keep skin feeling fresh.

Grown rather than gathered

Some ingredients are extracted, some are synthesised. This one is grown: split-gill mushroom mycelium, cultivated in liquid until it produces beta-glucan. It is here with the skin barrier in mind.

Das ist echt sehr praktisch. Ich benutze es meistens als Cleanser, aber manchmal auch als Maske, vor allem auf der Nase. Danach fühlt sich die Haut dort schön sauber an.

Nach dem Waschen fühlt sich meine Haut oft trocken und gespannt an, aber bei diesem Cleanser ist das nicht so. Die Haut fühlt sich sauber und weich an. Ich mag auch die Textur sehr, sie ist ziemlich ungewöhnlich, aber macht Spaß bei der Anwendung.

Do I have to use it as a mask every time?

No. It is up to you and how your skin feels that day. Use the mask when skin wants more, the foam on its own the rest of the time. Both are fine every day.

Is it gentle enough for sensitive skin?

It passed a skin test at Dermatest, an independent German lab, and it is made at the same pH as your skin. If your skin reacts easily, try a small patch first.

Does it remove makeup and sunscreen?

We recommend taking those off first, with a remover or a cleansing oil, then cleansing with this. A cleanser strong enough to remove sunscreen in one go usually strips your skin too.

Why does it feel dense?

So it stays on your face. A softer texture would slide off. Add water and it turns into a normal cleanser.

Why does the foam feel weak?

It needs more water. Keep adding water and rub your hands together, and the foam will build. It is dense rather than airy, so it looks smaller than it is.

What does pH 5 to 6.5 mean?

Your skin is slightly acidic. A cleanser far from that range can leave skin tight and sore for hours. This one sits close to where your skin already is.
